10 Favorite Ideas for the Coffee Bar in Your Home
- I love a kitchen with a coffee bar. Bonus points for being cute, functional, and suppling caffeine to the coffee lovers.
- Here I share my favorite home coffee bar ideas, coffee station items, organization, and storage.
What is a coffee bar or coffee station?
- It is a magical place in my home where I collect my daily dose of energy. Okay, but seriously…..
- Coffee bars are usually a designated space in the kitchen where the coffee maker, mugs, sweeteners, syrups, and coffee supplies live. You know all the coffee-making essentials.
- Typically, these are set up in a dedicated space in the kitchen, however you could also make a little coffee corner in your home office for a hot cup of coffee while you work.
Why would you want to set up a coffee bar?
- They are super convenient for busy mornings. All coffee supplies are together, minus refrigerated products.
- Guests can enjoy the experience of making their own coffee without feeling like they are invading your kitchen. I think this is a super nice touch as a hostess.
- If you typically go to a coffee shop, but you are needing to save money.
10 Favorite Elements and Coffee Bar Storage Ideas for Your Home
The following are 10 elements I incorporate into my coffee bar along with my favorite coffee bar storage ideas.
1: The Coffee Bar Furniture
- The first thing I thought about when setting up my DIY Coffee Station was furniture. Deciding between using the kitchen counter, the kitchen island, a freestanding cabinet, a small table, or a buffet table. I think it really depends on the kitchen design when finding that special place.
- A buffet table is a great option if you are utilizing the dining room for your personal coffee station.
- My kitchen is a small space, and I didn’t want to utilize the kitchen cabinets as part of the coffee bar cabinet. Those with a small kitchen will probably understand just how important every cabinet is.
- I started by looking around our storage shed to see if I had any items that I could repurpose for this and also checked out my local thrift store.
- Currently, I am on the lookout for an old library card catalog to fit our house decor but need one with the right dimensions to comfortably hold a coffee maker on top. I love the idea of giving this item a repurposed life.
- There are so many different looks you can create. I love the farmhouse look as well as the modern.
- Another thing to think about when deciding on coffee bar furniture is storage space.
- The coffee cabinet type make for great storage and a beautiful coffee bar. I’m not a fan of a coffee cart or kitchen cart unless the wheels are very heavy duty and have locks.
2: The Coffee Maker
- The OH SO IMPORTANT Coffee Maker. It’s a coffee bar after all.
- Whether you decide on a Keurig Coffee Machine, a French press, an espresso machine, or a tradition Coffee Maker, you want to make sure it comfortably fits on the counter space of your chosen piece of furniture whether it be a table or cabinet.
3: Coffee Mug Storage
- A mug rack is a great option for storing coffee mugs for your coffee bar. There are a few different types of mug racks. One type is a metal rack that you install on the wall that has cup hooks on it, this might be best for a small coffee station where you need the extra surface space.
- There are also mug racks that look like little trees. If you have the extra space, this could be a fun way to display the coffee cups.
- I like the idea of using something with cabinet space, because that is a great place to store seasonal mugs or extra guest mugs.
4: Coffee Mugs
- So, we talked about coffee mug storage, but what about coffee mugs?
- This is your home coffee bar. You can have a set of solid white mugs with the cute little writing that everyone seems to own or mix match of various mugs.
- You can also change out these mugs with the seasons. I love a cute Christmas mug myself.
Here are a few of my current favorites.
5: Coffee
- It is a coffee bar, we have to have coffee, am I right? Coffee beans, ground coffee, or coffee pods? Whatever helps you make a great cup of joe. How to store?
- I wouldn’t store large amounts of coffee just out in the open. Typically, the best place to store coffee is a dark, cool, and dry place. I keep smaller (like a week’s worth) of coffee in an airtight canister on the coffee bar and store the rest in a larger airtight container in the cabinet of the coffee bar for easy refills.
- A great way to store Pods are the drawers specifically made for them. The top is flat and provides a little more surface area to place lighter weighted objects on if you don’t have too much space. Alternatively, they also make spinning carousel holders, or a clear vase could do the trick.
6: Sweetener
- Sugar, Stevia, Honey regardless of what you use, I have some ideas on how to store them as part of my favorite coffee bar storage ideas.
- For sugar and stevia, I like using little jar canisters.
- For honey, I have a little honey pot that came with a honey dipper.
7: Syrups
- My favorite coffee making supplies are syrups, they really are what makes the perfect cup of coffee for me. My favorites are vanilla, caramel, and butter pecan.
- In the Winter, I also like peppermint and to add some candy canes to the station. Perhaps, the best way to enjoy a cup of coffee while watching Christmas movies.
- I like to put syrup in bottles because it just feels fancy, but I also love the convenience of a pump. Alternatively, you can leave them in the bottle and use a lazy susan or install some open shelves if you have a lot.
8: Decor
- This is the step were you really make this coffee bar your own. Decorating is really what makes for a cute coffee bar. Everyone is gonna have coffee, a coffee machine, and coffee-making supplies. But what makes this feel like yours.
- Will it match the rest of the house? Maybe you want a Farmhouse Coffee Bar? Remember how I said I was looking for a Library Card Catalog? I want mine to have an old time Library Feel.
- I think a chalkboard sign is super versatile here because you can change it up a bit. I also love cake stands, tea trays, and tiered trays on the coffee bar table.
- As you pick decor for the countertop (if you have space) and wall, really think about what you want the focal point to be. I also think you should keep that in mind when choosing how to store your mugs. If you have 20 mugs hanging on the wall, that is definitely going to be the focal point.
9: For the Kids
- I like to keep a few things for my kids in my little coffee nook, but I’m obviously not giving them coffee.
- Hot chocolate is a great thing to keep here so they also feel like they are getting a little treat. In the Fall, I also like to add Apple Cider. (That one is as much for me as it is for them).
- You can also add little snacks on the lower shelves if you use this type of furniture for your own coffee station/ if they are old enough to help themselves to snacks.
10: Tea Lovers this Section is for you
- Good News! I plan to do an in-depth article on getting a tea cart set up and creative ideas for those. But these are the basics.
- Additionally, it is okay to like both. I drink coffee as part of my morning routine and various types of tea throughout the day and I think tea is a great addition to a perfect coffee station.
- I really love the idea of a tiered tray to store tea, and tea related items when incorporating them into your home coffee station.
- So, these are items I like, and think are great ideas to help store tea on your DIY coffee bar.
Conclusion
- I hope this helps with setting up the perfect place for your coffee essentials.
- Find the perfect spot, pick out the furniture, add the important things to make the coffee, and the create your own coffee station look with decor and storage items. And voila! Your own coffee bar.
- If you have a coffee station idea, let me know in the comments.
