The Best Ideas for Above Fridge Cabinet Storage

  • The top of the fridge cabinet can be an awkward space when it comes to kitchen cabinets.
  • If you have a small kitchen, it can be a great way to find some extra space though!

The above the fridge cabinet is an awkward space.

  • We all know it. It is hard to access, you forget what is even up there, if you put anything up there at all.
  • However, it is still part of the kitchen cabinets! and that space is important!

Why is the top of the fridge cabinet basically a junk drawer?

  • No organization, we just store whatever up there or sometimes nothing at all.
  • Lack of easy access to it. No one wants to pull out a ladder just to get access to a cabinet.
  • So what should you store up there and how should you store it?

The Best Ways to Organize the Top of the Refrigerator Cabinet

Organization Idea #1: Add an extra shelf

This idea I actually use in my own home. I love how this shelf just sits inside the cabinet and provides extra kitchen storage space. This is a great spot for dishes you use a couple of times a year because you won’t be super concerned with ease of access. This is the perfect space for my Holiday Dishes.

If you are using the shelf for heavier items, you’ll want to store those items on the bottom of your cabinet rather than the shelf as it is a bit sturdier.

Organization Idea #2: Wine Collection

The top of your fridge is the perfect place to store your wine collection. This is especially great if it is a deep cabinet because you could possibly fit a wine rack. I definitely recommend measuring prior to ordering any organization products.

Wine Racks are good solutions for wine collections as typically you want to store wine bottles horizontally rather than standing upright.

Organization Idea #3: Coffee Mugs

Now, I’m not talking about the coffee mugs that are part of your every morning routine. I mean the guest mugs, the greatest mom mugs you can’t bear to part with, the Holiday mugs (aka those cute little snowmen mugs you use every winter).

When you have limited space, this cabinet is the perfect solution when the mugs in the regular cabinet runneth over. Additionally, you could use this space for spare water bottles.

Organization #4: Kitchen Utensils

For Kitchen Utensils that don’t need to be easy reach in a kitchen drawer, this cabinet space is a great option. If you have utensils that are only used for very few recipes, but you do use them you can easily store them up there. I use the cheese grater, lemon zester, cake decorating items, and serving utensils very rarely so I tend to store items in clear containers on my shelf. I like to use the clear bins as I can easily see what is in the container. The bins do a really good job at storing these smaller items.

Organization Idea #5: Small Appliances

Another kitchen organization idea I love is small appliances. I’m thinking appliances like waffle makers, quesadilla makers, smaller blenders, immersion blenders, small food processors, sous vide, and the list goes on. Recently, we have started buying seasonal and holiday waffle makes and have accumulated many more than we probably need, but they are so fun for a special occasion, this cabinet is a great place for these items.

All of these kitchen gadgets can use up so much space, so having a place for them off the kitchen cabinet is really important.

3 dish towels folded and stacked on top of each other.

Organization Idea #6: Dish Towels

Another thing I store in my over the fridge cabinet is dish towels. I have somewhat of a collection. I like to change them out for holidays, seasons, and special occasions. There are certain ones, I don’t want to risk getting stained, so I like to store them out of the way.

Organization Idea #7: Spices

If you have an abundance of spices, you only use for certain dishes, and you are looking for a place to store these rarely used spices consider putting a spice rack in this cabinet. Rather than a spice rack, you could also use a lazy susan turntable to easily organize and find the spices. Additionally, you could use a divided lazy susan to organize spices into different categories.

Organization Idea #8: Pantry Storage

If you lack pantry storage in your kitchen, the cabinet can be a useful space for grocery overflow. Additionally, if you like to take advantage of cost saving sales at the grocery store, you can utilize this space for storing those dry goods.

Organization Idea #9: Cleaning Supplies

If you don’t have a lot of space under your kitchen sink cabinet, or you need to store items out of reach of children, this high hard to reach cabinet could be an option. Extra dish soap, sponges, dusters, and many other items could easily fit in this space.

Organization Idea #10: Snacks

This one is a bit funny, but I’m sure someone out there understands secret stashes of snacks. The over the fridge cabinet can be a great place to store those snacks you don’t want to share.
